A Dog Birthday Party on a Budget!

When I woke up on September 3rd, 2016, I had no idea how much my life was about to change – I was going to have a new addition to my family.

Before you choke on whatever it is you’re drinking – no, I am not talking about me producing human spawn.

But I did become “mommy” to a very tiny baby chihuahua.

Now, I’m no stranger to small dogs; I had four at one point, and two of them are still with me today, but they live with my parents. I love all of my pets more than anyone could imagine, but in all honesty, I was starting to forget the comforts of having one live with me, 24/7.

This little pup has brought so much joy into our lives the past year, we decided we wanted to give her a little dog birthday party celebration. Since we don’t know her exact birthdate, we decided to observe it towards the beginning of July.

Throwing A Dog Birthday Party

For snacks, we kept everything really simple and on a very small budget. Since this was a busy week and weekend, I did something I’m not used to, and skipped cooking things from scratch and tried to utilize ready-made items for the human guests. We had Lil Smokies with BBQ sauce in a crockpot, vegetarian meatballs with BBQ sauce in a crockpot (for me!), hot dogs and veggie dogs which were steamed with the help of my awesome Hot Dog Steamer from Nostalgia Electrics, hummus and pita wedges, a couple of cheese logs, crackers, and chips.

I also illustrated BB and made a fun design that I printed onto cardstock and made mini dog birthday party hats and gift tags for the goodie bags. On the party hats, I just used crepe paper for the fringe. Of course, I knew that I’d have a hard time getting the guests to actually wear the hats, but I did manage to snap a shot of my kitty wearing one.

And what kind of dog birthday party would be complete without a dog cake?! I used a modified (ie: eggless) version of this recipe (which was a Banana Flax cake with a Sweet Potato & Peanut Butter “icing” and garnished with carob chips) and baked a mini cake and mini cupcakes. Lo and behold, BB wouldn’t touch the cake…but my other two pups ate it. ALL OF IT. They went absolutely nuts for the Sweet Potato & Peanut Butter “icing”.

I think BB, my other two doggies, my kitty, as well as my family, all enjoyed getting to hang out, have some snacks, and celebrate BB’s first birthday. This was certainly different than the majority of parties that I throw in the sense that it wasn’t spooky-themed, and I utilized a lot of store-bought goodies due to time constraints.
